The Southern Society for Irish Red & White Setters Open Show 19/07/2009
It was a great pleasure to judge this show. A shame that I was the judge to break its “sunshine” record. Despite the blustery conditions and an odd spot of rain I felt it far better to judge outside, my thanks to all for happily accepting this. If I have any general observation to make about the breed it is that we seem to be running the risk of losing substance, that is to say a lack of strong bone as opposed to weight and lumber. Whilst the entry was relatively small I was delighted with the standard and quality of some classes which forced me to make some very difficult decisions. Bitches on the day were overall better than the dogs particularly in the way they knew how to use their tails, too many high tails with the dogs.
Veteran Dog 3 (1 abs) 1.Jones’s Sh Ch Ryemills Deerstalker of Berryessa JW. Very nice dog for type and size. Dark expressive eye. Strong short pasterns and moved out well belying his age. Well balanced and angulated throughout which gives him the ability to move with relative ease and some style. BD and BOS
2. Lipscombe’s Kellizlot Master Merchant. Not quite the style or finish of 1. None the less a pleasant dog. Would prefer a slightly better defined head .Well enough made up with good bone not as well angulated at the rear which shows in rear extension. Quite a handful
for his handler so might have looked better at a different pace.
Puppy Dog 2 (1 abs) 1. Callaghan’s Dalriach Lord of the Isles for Laoirebay. 8 and half month old young man sadly stood alone as were several today. In beautiful coat and condition a real credit to his owners. Not yet the most typical of heads though time will tell on that one. Neat feet adequate bone, better angled in front than rear. In outline would prefer a better balanced picture but once again time may improve this. BPIS
Junior Dog 3 (1 abs) 1.Blackmore’s Taniswood Dirty Dancer at Courtdown. Good sized young dog, well balanced outline with nice angulation. Would have preferred a better defined stop. Good neat tight feet .Covered the ground well and will no doubt be a contender for high honours as he matures. His coat could be a bit clearer and maybe his red a bit richer but again with maturity some of this will come.
2. Robson’s Gallybob Goldcrest. Shorter coupled than 1 again not quite the rich deep red I would prefer to see. A little light in eye colour and not the substance of 1. His handler needs to be more confident as his nerves seemed to transfer to the dog. Rather erratic on the move and would benefit from being less strung up allowing a more precise assessment of his front movement.
Yearling Dog 3 (1 abs) 1.Blackmore’s Taniswood Dirty Dancer at Courtdown. Comments from junior dog apply
2. Barry’s Rustasha Red Hot Rhumba Nicely coloured dog .Presented a reasonably balanced picture rather proud of his tail. A shade more upright in shoulder than 1 moved ok but would prefer a little bit more drive from behind.
Post Graduate Dog 1. Barry’s Rustasha Red Hot Rhumba Comments as above.
Limit Dog 3. 1. Humphries Spyfire Priceless. Well presented and handled. A well balanced picture with the right amount of substance for size. Good angulation would just like to see the front pasterns a little more upright. Good eye and soft expression.
2.Lipscombe’s
Open Dog 2. 1. Valentine’s Sh Ch/ Ir.Sh Ch Tullamore Ted JW Well marked dog in peak condition lovely colour . Presented a compact picture with a great tail set and action. Good front assembly leading through to a strong neck and good shoulder. Good eye and expression would prefer a better turn of stifle which would increase his ability to cover the ground economically. RBD
2.Ward’s Caispern Nicolaus Silver Cum Copperwhite JW Sh. Cm Similar type of dog to 1 though not the overall quality throughout. Would also like to see a better angulated rear end. On the stand presented a good picture of balance.
Veteran Bitch
My notes say “ by far the happiest class of the day “ and indeed it was .These ladies all moved with a thirst for life and it was really heartening to see 4 in a class who all knew just how to use a tail.
4. 1. Barcroft’s Sh Ch Ballakinnish Minuet Very nice happy girl well presented and in good coat and condition. Very typical well balanced and angulated covering the ground with a cheerful and happy ease. Good head eye and expression nice colour and good coat. More than happy to see she ended the day RBIS RBB & BVIS
2. Humphries Sh Ch Vanders Verily Via Spyefire Another top quality lady. Well presented and handled impeccably .On the day not quite the coat quality of the winner but truly a worthy champion. Lovely soft expression well balanced and effortless on the move once again though would prefer a little less angulation on the front pasterns.
Yearling Bitch 3. (1 abs ) 1.Humphries Laoirebay All That Jazz Among Spyefire. Nicely proportioned and balanced, good feet and nice reach of neck. Well placed shoulders happy on the move with correct tail action.
2.Butcher’s Rustasha Red Hot Ruby A bit of a fidget who unfortunately left her coat at home. Have every reason to think that with maturity will improve. Well put together balanced and sound on the move.
Post Graduate Bitch 1. 1.Butcher’s Rustasha Red Hot Ruby . Comments as above
Limit Bitch 4. ( 2 abs )
1.Housby’s Tullamore Tiggywinkle Very pleasant young lady of pleasing type. Good colour and well made and balanced moved herself confidently and steadily. Good reach of neck with nice clean shoulders well let down rear end, with time should have a bright future.
2.Ward’s Copperwhite Cordelia Another competent bitch not as steady on the move today as her opposition. Balanced and correctly angled clean neck and shoulder. On another day and a bit more settled will show her attributes to fuller advantage.
Open Bitch
Without a shadow of doubt the very best class of the day. Three Champion bitches and it was easy to know why, all full of quality of good consistent type all happy on the move and all so well put together a conundrum of a class to judge.
1. Blackmore’s Sh Ch Courtdown Beautiful Dawn -Lovely bitch so happy to move and show herself off , well handled and presented. Good colour best of heads and expression. Super neck and shoulder. A picture of balance strong rear end allowing her to move easily and economically cover the ground with ease and style. At one with her handler never really placed a foot wrong. Delighted to make her BB and BIS.
2.Barry’s Sh Ch Shireoak Hurricane Ruby Rustasha ( Can Imp ) How easily could this lady swap places with the winner ? The answer of course is quite often. Again very well put together happy and confident had the upper hand on the winner in terms of muscle tone but on the day was just lacking the overall finish ,her coat was not quite so good . She is well balanced and again knows how to use her tail to best advantage, a big credit to her owners and breeder.
